This System Pavers Driveway Outlasted The House!

Published Date: Aug 27, 2024

As outdoor remodeling experts who have been doing this for a long time (32 years and counting), we’ve had the privilege of being able to see the durability of our work over the long haul. However, it’s rare that we get to see it in action quite like this!

Twenty years ago, System Pavers installed a gorgeous paving stone driveway for a neighbor of one of our company’s founders. Over the years, he would drive by and happily notice that the driveway had remained in great condition, year after year. It held up to California’s intense heat and droughts, heavy rains, salty ocean air, the occasional earthquake, and a lot of wear and tear. But what happened recently truly underscored the lasting quality of our work.

The house, which had stood there for decades, was completely demolished. To do this work, a massive machine was brought in—one capable of tearing down entire walls and roofs with ease. Over the next few days, it drove back and forth across the 20-year-old paver driveway, hauling out debris and loading it into huge dump trucks that were parked on it. The demolition process was rigorous, and heavy machinery and constant pressure was applied to the driveway the entire time.

If it had been any other driveway, particularly one built of concrete or asphalt, the result would have likely been disastrous. Cracks, crumbles, and possibly even buckling or caving in under the weight of those trucks! But our paver driveway? The one we installed twenty years ago? It didn’t flinch. Not a single paver was out of place. After all that work, the driveway remained perfectly level, with no dips, cracks, or damage to be seen.

We were pleased…but not surprised. Paving stones, when properly installed using techniques such as our patented Permalast Layered Install System™ clearly have many advantages over traditional materials such as concrete. They’re designed to gently flex with the earth as it shifts and settles, which helps prevent cracking and adds to their durability. And if anyone ever needs to access or install utility lines underneath them, they can simply pull them up, do their work, and then seamlessly zip them shut again. No driveway replacement or ugly patches needed!
