Project Highlight: A Sustainable Backyard, Built For Max Enjoyment

Published Date: Aug 16, 2024

As the nation’s leader in outdoor remodeling, System Pavers has been designing and installing beautiful outdoor spaces for over three decades. We love tackling projects that truly bring a space to life – remodels that combine beauty, functionality, and sustainability for a cohesive look that adds lasting value to a home. Recently, we worked with homeowners in Monument Colorado to create a dreamy backyard that uses thoughtful design and eco-friendly features to create an easy-to-maintain space this family can share for generations.

Foundations Built to Last: Pavers for the Win

Although these days we work with a wide array of products, in 1992, it was pavers that got us into the world of outdoor renovations. Specifically…durable, versatile, high-quality pavers. We chose paving stones because they offer many advantages over traditional hardscape materials such as concrete or asphalt. Not only do they provide a timeless, elegant look, but pavers stand the test of time tremendously well. Unlike concrete, which can crack and require large-scale repairs, pavers are designed to slightly shift and distribute weight evenly. This makes them twice as strong as concrete!

Plus, pavers are much easier to maintain and repair if necessary. If one stone gets damaged, it can simply be swapped out without disturbing the surrounding area. This reduces both waste and cost over the long haul. Longevity makes pavers an eco-friendly choice, as they significantly reduce the need for frequent repairs and the environmental impact associated with tearing up and replacing a concrete patio or driveway.

For this home, we created several multi-purpose patios using pavers. Over one portion of the backyard, we used a technique referred to as permeable pavers – which can be created by alternating paving stones and green space. This allows room for water to drain while still providing a good deal of erosion control and creating a level space. The result is a backyard built for maximum enjoyment and minimal upkeep.

Step It Up with Composite Decking: Natural Look, Note-worthy Durability

To take advantage of that amazing Monument, Colorado view and have more room to hang out and relax, these homeowners added multiple decks that could be enjoyed from different areas of the house. We always suggest using premium composite decking, which is extraordinarily durable and has the look of natural wood without all the upkeep and hassle.

Unlike traditional wood decks, composite decking won’t splinter or rot, and it doesn’t require staining or sealing. This means using fewer toxic chemicals and no more inhaling harsh fumes to keep your deck looking pristine. Sustainably made from 95% recycled materials, composite decking also reduces waste and minimizes environmental impact across the supply chain.

Low-Maintenance Lawn? Bring It On With Artificial Turf!

Conserving water is a critical consideration in today’s landscaping projects, especially in a place like Monument, where water resources can be scarce. For this project, we installed high-quality artificial turf in place of a traditional grass lawn. With a lush, green appearance that’s almost indistinguishable from natural grass, the benefits of artificial turf go way beyond aesthetics. Turf requires no mowing, no weeding, no fertilizers, no pesticides, and most importantly in drought-prone areas, no watering! This not only reduces environmental impacts, but it also saves homeowners time and money on lawn maintenance.

For this backyard, the emphasis was on creating versatile spaces that stayed beautiful and well-manicured with minimal upkeep. Artificial turf was an easy solution as it looks freshly mown and stays green throughout every season. Because ours is installed using our unique drainage system, it won’t absorb waste or allow water to pool. And, as an added environmental benefit, it’s toxin-free, PFAS-free, and antimicrobial, ensuring a backyard that’s safe for children, pets, and Mother Nature.
