Paver and turf pool deck by a lovely patio

Project Highlight: A Bay Area Backyard Built For Entertaining

Published Date: Sep 6, 2026

It may have started as a sprawling, underused yard, but with the right planning and vision, we turned this Northern California backyard into a modern outdoor retreat. See how we brought it all together with an inviting paver pool deck, spacious outdoor kitchen, multiple entertaining spaces, and low-maintenance living that’s turned this yard into everyone’s favorite place to unwind.

For these Bay Area homeowners, the goal was to create an expansive outdoor space that expanding their living space and was easy to enjoy every day. The family was renovating their house and wanted a backyard that did their remodel justice. Specifically, they envisioned a backyard that could support everything from quiet afternoons by the pool to lively gatherings with friends and family. And the kicker? It all needed to be built to ensure less on their to-do list, rather than creating a long list of yard work before being able to have fun.

The result is a modern outdoor retreat that dramatically transformed the property while complementing the clean, California ranch-style character of their newly updated home.

Turning an underused yard into a daily destination

Before the remodel, much of the expansive backyard was dirt and underused space. While the family had dreams of lounging poolside, the surrounding yard didn't offer the kind of cohesive outdoor living experience they envisioned.

The opportunity was bigger than simply adding a new patio or replacing the landscaping. The entire backyard was ready to be reimagined.

Backyard before with empty pool and dirt yard

As experts in creating spaces that “flow” well, our System Pavers team designed a series of connected outdoor living areas that gave the yard purpose from one end to the other. A new paver pool deck surrounds the pool, creating a polished setting for swimming, lounging and enjoying sunny Bay Area days. Throughout the entire yard, paver walkways and patios naturally lead to additional areas for relaxing, dining and entertaining.

The design was created to make the backyard feel like a natural extension of the home rather than a separate space. Clean lines, large-format pavers and carefully placed areas of artificial turf create a modern look that complements the home's architecture while giving the expansive yard a sense of structure.

The after speaks for itself:

A pool area designed for more than swimming

The pool may be one of the centerpieces of the backyard, but now it isn't the only reason to head outside.

An expansive paver pool deck provides plenty of room to move around the pool and creates comfortable spaces for sunbathing and lounging nearby. Just beyond it, separate sitting areas give guests a place to spread out while still feeling connected to the activity happening around the yard.

It's a thoughtful approach to pool landscaping and outdoor design: instead of dedicating the entire backyard to the pool, the pool becomes one part of a larger outdoor experience.

And because the backyard was designed for year-round enjoyment, the space doesn't become unused when the swimming season ends.

An outdoor kitchen made for gathering

One of the biggest priorities for the remodel was creating an outdoor kitchen with a pizza oven that could serve as a true hub for entertaining.

We decided it made the most sense to have the kitchen just off the pool to so that snacks and beverages could stay handy while extending the entertainment potential of the entire yard.

The finished kitchen combines a BBQ grilling station with a wood-fired pizza oven, beverage refrigerator, sink and generous steel cabinet storage. Built-in storage beneath the pizza oven keeps firewood close at hand while maintaining the clean, organized appearance of the space.

Perhaps most importantly, the long countertops provide plenty of room for preparing and serving food—and include counter-height seating that lets guests pull up a seat and stay part of the conversation.

That's what makes a well-designed outdoor kitchen so much more than a place to cook. It becomes a gathering point where the person at the grill doesn't have to disappear from the party.

Just off the kitchen, a dedicated paver dining area creates another natural gathering space for enjoying meals outdoors with a view of the pool and the rest of the backyard.

A backyard that makes relaxing easy

Behind the outdoor kitchen, another paver patio creates a more intimate destination for relaxing around a modern, square built-in fire pit.

It's the kind of space that can take on a different role as the seasons change. On a warm evening, it provides a comfortable place to gather after dinner or can warm the kids up after a long swim in the pool. On a cooler Northern California night, the fire pit adds warmth and gives everyone another reason to stay outside longer.

That flexibility was an important part of the overall design.

Rather than creating a backyard that works for only one season or one type of activity, the remodel gives the homeowners multiple ways to enjoy the space throughout the year—whether they're swimming, dining, grilling, relaxing or gathering around the fire.

The beauty of a low-maintenance backyard

Of course, a beautiful backyard is even better when it doesn't require constant upkeep.

The homeowners wanted the look and feel of a lush outdoor space without the maintenance associated with a traditional lawn. We accomplished this by incorporating artificial turf throughout the design, placing strips of greenery between the large-format pavers.

The result is a distinctive paver and turf yard that adds greenery and visual interest while maintaining the modern aesthetic.

It also eliminates the need for mowing and helps keep grass clippings out of the pool—an especially welcome benefit in a backyard centered around swimming and outdoor entertaining.

Combined with durable paver surfaces and clearly defined outdoor living areas, the design delivers the low-maintenance outdoor space the homeowners were looking for without sacrificing beauty.

An outdoor space built for what comes next

What makes this Bay Area outdoor renovation stand out isn't any single feature. It's the way everything works together.

The pool deck connects to the patios. The patios connect to the kitchen. The walkways create an effortless flow between each living area. Turf brings greenery into the clean-lined hardscape. And the fire pit extends the life of the backyard well beyond the swimming season.

Together, these elements transformed a huge expanse of dirt and unusable yard into a destination designed for everyday life.

For homeowners considering Northern California outdoor remodeling, it's a great example of what can happen when an outdoor renovation starts with how you want to use the space.

For this Bay Area home, that means more time by the pool. More dinners outdoors. More evenings around the fire. More time with family and friends.

And all in a beautiful outdoor space that adds real value to the home while enjoying it daily feels effortless.
