Creating the Ultimate Backyard Movie Theater

Published Date: Aug 4, 2023

As the weather gets warmer, we’re all looking for more reasons to get outdoors. What better way to get everyone smiling than by hosting a movie party under the stars? We’ve got all the tips and tricks you need to turn your yard into a theater any time you like. Read on for inspiration in creating an evening of entertainment, right at home.

First, Get a Projector & Screen

As your most important components for outdoor movie night, you’ll need a projector and a screen. Advancements in technology have made this easier than ever. You can now get relatively inexpensive LED projectors that will stream movies right from your phone or laptop. For a backdrop, you’ve got options. If you’re in the mood for a little DIY work, you can hang a white sheet. Or you can go for something a little sturdier and more convenient with a projector screen made especially for outdoor viewings. A blank wall will even do in a pinch. The key is to have a large amount of white space, so your movie has maximum clarity

Picnic blankets, piles of pillows, cushions, air mattresses…you can even haul a loveseat or recliner outdoors if you’re extra ambitious. Stuffed animals, cozy blankets and throw pillows are always welcome, too.

Inviting a mix of different ages to your party? You may want to create separate seating areas. One where the adults can sit and talk, a space for teens, and a rumpus zone where the kids can make a ruckus without interrupting the fun

Pick a Flick

Although you can show any movie outdoors, we recommend picking a classic. Surefire winners for outdoor viewings are movies like E.T., Jurassic ParkField of Dreams, and of course, anything Star Wars related. Just remember, even if you don’t invite your neighbors, they may be able to hear what you’re watching. Ensuring it’s a family friendly flick is usually a wise decision if you want to avoid ruffling feathers.

Plan For Snack Attacks

No outdoor movie night would be complete without popcorn. However, any finger foods will do! Keep it simple so you can focus on socializing by creating a self-serve station for your guests. Stock it with classics like with popcorn, pretzels, candy, soda, water, and an array of adult
