Thinking about landscaping your outdoor living space can seem overwhelming. Many people tend to focus on the flowers that they would like to have in their garden and how to best utilize the space. But there is so much more to consider. The key to a beautifully landscaped space is to have a good plan before you even begin the work. These seven tips will help you get started to create the best garden retreat you can for your home while including features you love. 1. Use plants and features that fit with each other: Many landscapers tend to work with a small space. Choose flowers, vines or other plants that work with your home. Avoid highlighting too much of one feature or plant — that can overwhelm the rest of your yard. Finding complementing features causes a feeling of contentment for those who enjoy your outdoor living space. A well-balanced landscape is a beautiful thing! 2. Plant away from power lines: One of the first steps when landscaping to make sure that trees don’t interfere with power lines. Analyze the height of the tree and determine whether or not it could cause problems in the future with the utilities in the area. Trees that grow up into power lines often need to be pruned back or. If you don’t prune them back, they can start a fire. 3. Emphasize focal points of the yard: If you have a particularly stunning part of your yard, you will want people to see it and enjoy the space. Draw attention to those features with selective planting of brightly colored plants and flowers. Vibrant colors scattered about the yard only serves to distract people. Instead, plant colors near the areas of your yard that already attract people. 4. Be selective with ornamental pieces: Ornamental pieces can be distracting and pull attention away from your outdoor living spaces highlighted features. Select only ornamental pieces that are meaningful to you. Consider the size of your yard, and make sure they serve a purpose in your landscaping scheme. 5. Plant at the proper depth: Many gardeners make the mistake of planting their bulbs, seeds or saplings too deep in the ground. The roots may rot if the plant is planted too low, this due to the air not being able to reach the roots. Avoid this planting error by looking at the depth of the container that the plant comes in from the nursery. Dig to the height of the container and plant your flower or tree at that depth, if you are in doubt call your local nursery and ask. They are always very knowledgeable and can help to make sure you are placing the plant or tree in the ground the correct way. 6. Invest in exterior lighting: Most landscaping and planning happens during the day. Many people don’t consider how their landscaping will look at night. 7. Keep local wildlife in mind: Depending on where you live, you might have some local wildlife visiting your yard. Deer like flowering plants. Other animals can also be attracted to certain flowers or seeds. Try planting bitter tasting flowers like, snapdragons, Shasta daisy, or lilies next to the flowers that you love. These bitter flowers will deter the deer from finding your yard as its primary food source. Follow these tips, and you will have a beautifully landscaped outdoor living space that you will enjoy for many years to come.
