Sam the Cooking Guy's Backyard Transformation
My backyard is done, and it’s amazing. But it’s funny how my feelings were about it along the way.
I was excited for it in the beginning, and I mean super excited. But as the work began, both my wife and I started to have questions and maybe even doubts. We loved the yard the way it was because it was something of a sanctuary for us. Quiet, serene – simply a place to relax.
I mean I’ve always wanted a proper place to cook outside. Yes I had a grill and a smoker, but something more permanent was the goal. And as we saw the changes start to happen, we got a bit spooked. Were we making a mistake? Should we have left it the way it was? Those questions were definitely running through our minds. Change is always good, but getting there can be a bit of a struggle at times. We kept saying – let’s just wait till it’s all done until we decide how we feel.
And about a week the final pieces were in place – grills set, pergola installed and furniture in place. After work one night we poured a cocktail, walked outside and stood…and looked. One simple word captured all of our feelings – wow.
It’s still serene and it’s still a place to relax. But now, it’s so much more. And for what I do it couldn’t be better. We broke it in with a family event 2 days ago and it was a pleasure to be in. One family member texted:
“I just love what you created – it’s the best spot to just hang and gives such a relaxing feeling”
And I have only one misgiving about the project: why the hell didn’t I do this sooner?
