Creating a Beautiful Summer Garden
Contributing Guest Blogger: Kirby Green
Do sizzling summer temperatures have you feeling antsy this month? Believe it or not, it is possible to calm your mind and cultivate Zen in your own backyard!
Nothing sings the songs of summer and whispers peace, quite like the hummingbird. Delightful little creatures, hummingbirds have wonderful healing qualities. They inspire individuals to linger on their brief encounters, while leading us into a state of awe and appreciation. Appeal to the senses of the hummingbird by creating a garden which attracts these beautifully colored small birds.
Not only do retaining walls create a whole new dimension to your outdoor area, they can also create new spaces for sitting with friends and enjoying hot summery days. Not to forget, attracting these gorgeous birds! Natural stone and interlocking paving stone walls are ideal for growing and holding various flowers and vines year round.
So, when you’re trying to lure hummingbirds into your garden remember there is more than just a hummingbird feeder to consider! A small tree or bush is always welcomed by a visiting hummingbird. Often times you may even find them resting in those spaces between feedings. Hummingbirds are very territorial and will keep watch over their feeders and plants. Hummingbirds appreciate foliage to hide within and conceal their presence. Decorate your retaining walls with perennials like columbine and geraniums. Various flowers such as Bee balm, cardinal, bleeding hearts, salvia, lupine, petunias also draw hummingbirds in. Retaining walls and pillars are ideal for creating and attracting that ever elusive “Zen.”
Not only will you be redesigning your summer garden, but you’ll also be mesmerized by the peaceful and calming energy the hummingbird brings to your garden and your every-day life!
