Get Outside and Play!

Get Outside and Play!

Sep 11 2014

One of the most tragic things I know about human nature is that all of us tend to put off living. We are all dreaming of some magical rose garden over the horizon instead of enjoying the roses that are blooming outside our windows today. ~ Dale Carnegie When was the last time you just went outside and played? We all get caught up in the daily routines and sometimes forget to take time for ourselves to have fun. And now that school is back in session, life is getting busier with the hustle and bustle of homework, after school activities, music lessons, competitive sports activities - the list goes on and on, and it can be difficult to carve out time for kids to just be kids and play. With how hectic the world is, our children are losing the opportunity to cut lose and play. A Boston College Professor and Researcher recently shared that some of the most important skills children need to learn are not taught in the classroom but during unstructured time like recess. Even as adults we sometimes need to just let go and play - It helps reduce stress and can increase creativity. So pull out an old sheet, create a tent and pretend you are camping in the woods or going on an expedition looking for bears. Sit on a swing and just enjoy watching the clouds roll by and seeing how high you can go. Lie on your artificial turf and see shapes in the clouds or watch the airplanes fly by overhead. And remember to have fun! Create tic-tac-toe outside with a few rocks and some chalk. Outdoor Tic-tac-toe Photo Credit: Ribbons.com Play a big game of dominos or chess outdoors. Remember to keep games age appropriate and allow yourself and your kids the opportunity to just unwind and play. It will help them get rid of that excess energy and then focus on the homework for the evening. Use your imagination and create great memories together. And don’t forget to yell, “tag you’re it!”
