Hey, Will You Bring Something?
Written by: Sam the Cooking Guy
I am fond of saying people are usually so relieved NOT to have to entertain at their own homes, that when asked to bring a dish to someone else's party ... they happily agree.
And to make that point here's a real life example. A good friend with a wonderful outdoor entertaining area has a tremendous summer party every year. He hates to cook but loves to entertain, so when it comes to food, he doesn't make a thing. And when I say nothing, I really mean nothing. But he organizes it so well and gives out detailed instructions on what to bring you'd think he cooked, or at least was responsible for every part of the food. People show up with amazing appetizers, interesting things to grill and fantastic desserts - all only coordinated by him.
So here's the real message:
You don't have to make everything yourself when you entertain.
But you also don not have to be like my friend and have people bring everything. You can make a few things and have a few things brought and all will be well. But there is one thing to keep in mind ... you need to be very specific when asking someone to bring something to a party. For example, you can't just say 'salad' unless you're going to be fine with whatever salad they bring.
I mean you might have a green salad in mind, but to them 'salad' could be anything from pasta to coleslaw to that odd combination of marshmallows and canned fruit. So be specific. But more importantly, just do something. It's all good and life is way too short not to.
