Splash Into Summer With These Pool Tips
Summer is just around the corner, which for many families means it's time for poolside fun! But before you splash into summer fun you need to keep a few things in mind as you start to plan for the hotter months of the year so they are as safe as they are fun. For those who have pools in their outdoor living space, you need to take a few steps to make the most of the summer fun, whether you're enjoying family time or throwing the biggest poolside bash of the year.
First, remember that before splashing in, you must perform all necessary maintenance tasks to get your pool ready for the summer months. If you use a pool service, give them a call and schedule an appointment before you plan to use the pool. Meanwhile, if you take care of pool maintenance on your own, have all necessary supplies on hand and perform major tasks such as shocking the water well before anybody plans on jumping in. Also take the time to review your equipment and make sure that it is in good working order.
Now is also the perfect time to ensure that your pool is completely safe for all members of your family, including pets. Be sure that the area surrounding your pool is a slip-free zone. Many families choose to install elements such as pavers that will drain and prevent slipping around this time of year, especially if they have younger family members for whom pool safety may not be a priority. (Though this is also the perfect time to re-acquaint all your family members with pool safety basics.)
If your pool is fenced in, ensure that you can securely lock the gate, and keep the keys to the pool area in a safe place. If the gate doesn't lock, consider the purchase of a pool cover to increase the safety of your pool. And as always, remember that there should be no running around the pool; safety devices such as floaties should be available for younger children; no younger children should ever be around a pool without an adult who knows how to swim present; and you should do an assessment of each swimmer's abilities. Consider swimming lessons for little ones so they can enjoy pool time with the family.
After you have all your safety concerns taken care of, you can start thinking about ways to make your swim time even more fun. Consider investing in a variety of pool toys and items for all members of your family. Pool noodles, inflatable rafts, and even items such as floating tables can all be used to enjoy time in the water. Purchase items for water games such as diving sticks, beach balls, and water guns for even more playtime. Also, think about towels, you will want larger pool towels to have available for guests to use. Keep a stack on hand for everyone to enjoy.
You can also find items such as swimming goggles and snorkels, which are especially fun for older children who are increasing their swim abilities and learning how to snorkel – skills that can keep them safe as they make their way into deeper waters. If you are planning on having a large pool party consider hiring a local lifeguard to watch over the pool so you can enjoy your guests.
With so many ways for your family to enjoy some poolside fun this summer, you will make memories as you swim your cares away!
