Planning a Teddy Bear Picnic
Teddy bears are best friends, confidants, and an important part of childhood for boys and girls alike. What better way to celebrate the importance of your child’s favorite stuffed bear (or turtle, or kangaroo, or bunny) than with a teddy bear picnic? A teddy bear picnic is a great option for a young one’s birthday as well as a simple afternoon enjoying the sun. Whether you include your child’s playmates and their own stuffed pals or opt for a simple afternoon play date for your little one and their collection of furry friends, there are many ways to make this a special occasion for your child and join in on the fun.
If you do plan on having other children over for the occasion, remember to send out invitations (to the kids, as well as their teddy bear companions and their adult chaperones). Making the invitations yourself is a fun craft to do with kids, whether you make invitations ahead of time or make them on the day of the celebration. And remember, even if you aren’t having guests over, this can still be a fun way for them to invite their stuffed animal friends along for the celebration!
Decorations can be as simple or as complex as you want them to be. Do remember to have a picnic blanket ready – preferably one that you don’t mind getting a little bit dirty. For a larger celebration, you can find themed blankets and matching ribbons, paper plates, and balloons to jazz up your outdoor space.
Once you have the decorations ready, you can start thinking about food. In keeping with the teddy bear theme, you can opt for fresh berries and a veggie platter along with finger sandwiches and refreshing drinks. Since it is a picnic, think of menu items that are simple to serve and that suit a warm summery day. Peanut butter filled celery sticks with raisins or healthy oatmeal cookies are also great additions! For a birthday party, consider cupcakes as an alternative to a regular cake for an easy-to-serve (and somewhat less messy) option.
Your child and their teddy bear companion may be the best of friends, but they likely have very different appetites. While you prepare fresh, healthy foods for any kids and adults that may be in attendance, be sure to let your child make some delicious pretend foods for their teddy bear pals. Play-Doh can be perfect for crafting colorfully tasty treats for teddy bears – find simple dough recipes available online if you would prefer to craft your own. Serve everything up in a “picnic” basket to capture the fun and festive atmosphere and make the day special.
Remember to have some fun games and activities planned for the occasion as well. Consider hiding craft-paper teddy bears around your garden for a fun treasure hunt, or make your own “Pin the Tail on the Teddy” board! If you will be having guests, consider purchasing small new teddy bear friends as party favors to commemorate the occasion. A teddy bear picnic can be a great way to celebrate in the summertime and to make your child’s best friend a special part of the occasion!
