Have Fun at Home on National Picnic Day | System Pavers
April 23rd is National Picnic Day! The perfect excuse to enjoy sunshine, good food, and relaxing time with your loved ones. Make this special holiday count with a few ideas for celebrating at home.
What inspired National Picnic Day? The start of April 23rd being a day to celebrate the picnic is unclear but picnics themselves have been around since the mid-18th century. In France, people young and old would dine al fresco, taking just a loaf of bread, a hunk of cheese, some fruit, and a bottle of wine. Piquenique in French literally means a meal eaten outdoors and allows people to enjoy a casual party under the sky. It’s the perfect way to spend a warm spring day or a summer evening. There are so many different ways to enjoy a picnic, here are a few suggestions for you to make this day extra special.
Keep it Traditional
The ubiquitous image of a picnic calls up the brown wicker basket, the red plaid tablecloth spread on the ground, with maybe a little bit of Frisbee or football to keep the kids entertained. Celebrate National Picnic Day in the traditional way with a blanket on artificial turf or on your lawn. Make cold cut sandwiches, pack up some simple and healthy snacks, and juice boxes and water bottles for the kids. Don’t forget the adults! Add a bottle of wine to keep your picnic tied to its French roots.
A great way to make your picnic successful is to include a few games to keep everyone entertained. Board games and card games can get everyone relaxed and having fun in no time.
When’s the best time of day for your picnic? Sunset makes a great time, as you don’t have to worry as much about keeping everyone sun screened and protected from the heat. You’ll have the added bonus of a beautiful view as the sun goes down and the cool air will help keep the bugs away. This is especially true during the spring, as the sun sets later than usual, giving you plenty of time to prep during the day and hours to enjoy the cool evening and good food and company.
Opt for a Picnic Barbecue
Feeling a little less traditional and looking for something a bit different? Have a picnic barbecue in your backyard! Use your built-in grill to cook up some burgers, hot dogs, chicken, and vegetables. Pass around chilled drinks from your outdoor fridge without worrying about going inside for drinks. Invite over friends and family and make it a potluck picnic so that everyone has plenty of options to choose from and enjoy together.
Even from your patio you can still lay out a blanket. Alternatively, utilize the bar seating set up at your outdoor kitchen. This is a particularly good choice if any elderly friends or family are joining your picnic, as getting up and down from the ground can prove difficult for aging joints.
Whichever choice you go with, remember that a successful picnic really only needs a few basic things: good food, a good setting, and good company. Don’t forget to celebrate National Picnic Day and the beautiful weather of spring on April 23rd.
