Backyard Memorial Day: History, Fun and Outdoor Living

May 24 2018

Memorial Day is often viewed as a giant party. It marks the unofficial start of summer, which has everyone in a great mood. People throw parties, grill food and drink plenty of refreshments. It is a wonderful long weekend. However, Memorial Day is about so much more than celebrating summer with a massive bash.

It is important to remember the brave men and women who put their lives on the line to protect everyone’s freedoms. Those who lose their lives in the line of duty are never forgotten. Memorial Day is about recognizing those who died while serving in the United States military at home and around the world.

The perfect Memorial Day celebration not only lets guests have fun, but also remembers the historical significance of this wonderful holiday.

Have Guests Bring American Flags

Every guest can bring one American flag when they arrive for the Memorial Day party. Together, these flags can be laid down on the lawn to honor soldiers who lost their lives in the line of duty. Hosts who have friends or family who passed away in the line of duty can honor those veterans directly.

Guests could share their stories about veterans in their family. Some may not be comfortable sharing. They could write down the name of someone they love who passed away while serving and place it with the flags.

Share the Story of Declaration Day with your Kids

The history of Memorial Day goes all the way back to the 1850s when Americans began honoring fallen soldiers at least one time a year with a special event. In 1868, American General John A. Logan issued the “Declaration Day” proclamation so it would be observed annually around the nation.

The first Memorial Day celebration in the North took place on May 30th, 1868. History suggests the day was chosen because it was the perfect moment for flowers to bloom in those states.

Every region in the United States has its own Memorial Day story. Those in the South have their own memories passed down from generations. A Memorial Day party is the perfect moment for parents and veterans to talk about what they remember regarding the history of Memorial Day. It is important for children to understand their country’s history on such days.

Have a Block Party with Local Veterans

It is no Memorial Day party without veterans. By inviting a local veterans organization, or veterans the host knows personally, the party has even more meaning. It is a wonderful chance for veterans to mingle with everyone else, share their stories and feel the Memorial Day appreciation.

When homeowners have a BBQ deck or outdoor kitchen set up in their backyard, hosting such bloc parties can become an annual tradition. It is incredible to have all friends, family and local veterans spending time together.

Memorial Day parties are meant to be fun occasions. Everyone gets together, grills and has a great time. However, interjecting some somber and reflective moments ensures the true meaning of the holiday is never lost.
