4 Northern California Suburbs on the Rise

4 Northern California Suburbs on the Rise

Oct 24 2017

Notorious for its high cost of living, major cities in Northern California get passed over by those who assume they’ll never be able to afford it. The truth is, suburban areas in NorCal are affordable enough for many young professionals who are in the process of growing their families and careers simultaneously. Here are four municipalities for young professionals and growing families to watch out for when deciding where to settle in NorCal.

1. El Dorado Hills

Bordering Lake Folsom, El Dorado Hills has been repeatedly touted as one of the most desirable places to live in all of California. CNN Money even lists it in the top 100 places to live in the entire nation. The ample retail space is tempered by plenty of kid-friendly parklands, and the focus on outdoor recreation makes it a great spot for those who like hiking, boating, or just getting together in the backyard for putting practice on your private green. The hills and great natural aesthetics also provide serious landscape inspiration homeowners can bring to their own properties.

2. Roseville

The charmingly-named Roseville is a good pick for those who are looking for a close commute to Sacramento. This city is diverse and relatively affluent without being stuffy or intimidating. Like El Dorado Hills, Roseville is consistently ranked among the best places to move not only in California, but in the nation at large.

Parents considering moving to Roseville will be happy to find a stable school district for their children, and there are many family-friendly amenities in the community. Roseville communities encourage families to attend the regular family fun nights, enjoy the farmer’s markets, and Food Truck Cinemas. It’s small enough to be more cost-effective than a large city, but up-and-coming and family-oriented enough for new parents to easily settle in and feel confident that their kids and themselves will make lifelong friends.

3. Elk Grove

If Roseville is still too much of a “small-town” feel for some, a family can also consider another up-and-coming Sacramento suburb, Elk Grove. Picturesque historic districts, golf courses, with many community festivals and parks, including a rain garden, ensure there’ll be plenty to do and see when living in Elf Grove. This small city also has its finger on the pulse of suburban nightlife, boasting a number of breweries and a few small vineyards. Still, it’s an extremely large residential area, so there is also ample opportunity for hosting neighborhood block parties and creating a tight-knit community.

4. Clovis

From an economic perspective, Clovis offers more flexibility than many other communities in NorCal, and may be the right choice for the more budget-conscious family. Hosting a lake, multiple water parks, and relative proximity to the Sierra National Forest, make Clovis a top spot for families who want to enjoy a little bit of everything. For those who want to take weekends off at home, Clovis still has its advantages. More than 270 days of sunshine per year and no snowfall make this greater Fresno area community a great place to lay out by the pool and host in your outdoor kitchen majority of the year.

Why compromise? The beauty of nature, a close commute to Sacramento, a focus on family-friendly activities and growing businesses can make Northern California a great fit for young professionals and new or growing families.
