Planning the Perfect Patriotic Independence Day BBQ
With just one week left until the big day, it’s time to get planning for that perfect Fourth of July backyard BBQ with family and friends. You’ll want to make sure you stock up on supplies and recipes for some tasty appetizers, delicious grilled food, festive red, white, and blue cocktails, American flag-themed desserts, and of course the firework sparklers for when it gets dark! Now that you know the ingredients for a rockin’ Independence Day, let’s make sure you cover all your bases:
Outdoor Décor and Firework Safety
First things first, you’ll want to sure your outdoor space is decorated for the occasion. Place miniature American flags among your garden landscape, hang red white and blue streamers from the beams of your pergola, and set out your finest patriotic tableware. Red and blue solo cups are perfect for drinks and naturally festive. Don’t forget to keep a sharpie by the cups so everyone can write their name to keep track of their drink.
Use fireworks and sparklers safely! Read the directions thoroughly on the packaging prior to lighting. Adult supervision is necessary for those little ones wanting to join the fun. Lastly, we recommend lighting all fireworks on the safety of your paved patio or out front on your paver driveway. And please always double check that you’re away from anything flammable.
Layered Patriotic Cocktails
Don’t be alarmed, a layered cocktail is not difficult to pour! Since the ingredients that make up each layer have different densities, they float on top of one another. Just make sure you don’t accidentally put the top layer in first! PRO TIP: Pour slowly to keep the layers fully separated. To celebrate accordingly, try out the ‘Stars and Stripes cocktail’. This drink has a sweet citrus flavor of pomegranate and orange. Here’s what you’ll need to perfect your layering-
- Blue Curacao
- Vodka of choice (or whipped cream for virgin shots)
- Garnish shot glass rim with blue sugar
- Pour grenadine into bottom 1/3rd of the shot glass
- Pour Blue Curacao in equal measure
- Fill remaining portion of shot glass with vodka of choice or top with whipped cream
Delicious Grilled BBQ
Rainbow veggie kabobs fresh off the grill look pretty and taste even better! Toss your choice of vegetables in some garlic salt and extra-virgin olive oil, thread them onto skewers and grill to perfection. And this year, forget your traditional burgers. Go big for Independence Day and grill up some juicy bacon wrapped hamburgers! They’re easy, delicious and grill perfectly every time.
- 2 lbs ground beef
- One egg
- 3/4 cup breadcrumbs
- 3 tablespoons evaporated milk
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 2 cloves minced garlic
- Pinch of cayenne pepper
- Bacon of your choice
- Mix meet with egg, breadcrumbs, milk, Worcestershire sauce, garlic and cayenne pepper
- Separate meat evenly into 8 patties
- Wrap patties in bacon and secure with toothpicks
- Grill for 5 minutes on each side
Now that you have the appetizers, the burgers, and the drinks- it’s time to cover dessert!
American Flag Desserts
For dessert make an American Flag themed, red, white, and blue cake, cupcakes, pie- or just about any type of dessert! If you’ve got little ones to entertain this fourth of July, consider including them in the dessert making process. Bake some plain old vanilla boxed cupcakes and leave them as is. Mix some vanilla frosting with red and blue food coloring and set aside. Once your little guests arrive, break out the cupcakes, frosting, some sprinkles, blueberries and raspberries and let the kids have fun creating their own fourth themed cupcakes!
And for your fellow adult guests, bake a rectangular shape cake, frost it, then place in raspberries for the red stripes and blueberries on it for the blue field. For the white stripes and the stars in the field, coat some of the blueberries and raspberries in powdered sugar.
All that's left is for you and your loved ones to make this a Fourth of July to remember. Above everything, enjoy some quality time together reflecting on our country's independence.
